Exposure to asbestos during work is the cause of death of a worker at the Portland dockyard. The inquest ruled that he died due to an industrial disease, which is the technical term signifying death due to exposure to asbestos.

John William Harrison who lived in Plaister Lance in Sutton Poyntzworked worked as a carpenter and joiner. He died at the Queen Charlotte care home in Chickerell at the age of 79. It was revealed during the inquest into his death at County Hall in Dorchester that he died due to bronchial pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease resulting due to exposure to asbestos.

Donald Ross, the former co-worker of the diseased in the 1950s informed the inquest that both of them were exposed to asbestos during work and didn’t use any protective guard while working.

When queried by Michael Johnston, the West Dorset Coroner if all who worked as joiners and chippies in the dockyards were exposed to asbestos, he replied in the affirmative.

Mr Johnston said that as expected the evidence points to health hazards due to exposure to asbestos. Unfortunately many such incidents have been reported in Weymouth and Portland during that time. He also clarified that the recorded verdict is that Mr John William Harrison’s death was due to industrial disease, a technical term used to describe health problems occurring due to exposure to industrial asbestos during work.

This is good news for the workers and their families who have suffered due to industrial injury disease during work. But still they need good legal help in order to get the industrial disease claim which may be difficult to get through the no win no fee solicitors. Sometimes, the process may linger too long.
